Collection of Membership Fees
Beginning June 2026, a nominal contribution of $15 every six months will be introduced for each student who wishes to remain enrolled in Sendeng Teratai. This contribution will be collected twice a year, in June and December.
The primary reason for introducing this contribution is sustainability.
Since its establishment, Sendeng Teratai has largely been self funded. Much of the cost involved in running the perguruan has been supported through the personal contributions of our Guru, as well as through donations from well wishers and individuals who believe in the values and mission of Sendeng Teratai. At present, we do not receive financial support from external organisations, institutions, or formal funding bodies.
As a non profit entity, our guiding mission has always been to make Silat accessible to everyone, especially young people and families who may not otherwise have the financial means to participate in martial arts training. For this reason, Sendeng Teratai has deliberately kept its programmes open and affordable.
Our ability to do so has only been possible because of the dedication and generosity of many individuals within the community. Our Guru, coaches, team managers, and volunteers contribute their time, energy, and expertise without receiving financial compensation. Their service ensures that whatever limited resources we have can be directed towards sustaining and improving the learning experience for our pesilat.
However, after two years of active operations, we have found it increasingly challenging to continue sustaining the activities, logistical needs, and support systems that we provide for our students without some form of minimal contribution.
The $15 contribution every six months has therefore been introduced as a small and symbolic amount to support the continued sustainability of Sendeng Teratai.
The funds collected will primarily be used to support the logistical and operational needs of the perguruan. This includes the purchase and maintenance of training equipment, such as protective gear, training pads, mats, and other items that are necessary to ensure safe and effective training sessions.
In addition, the funds will help support competition related needs. As our students increasingly participate in Silat competitions, there are often logistical requirements involved, including preparation equipment, team coordination needs, minor competition related expenses, and other forms of support that help our pesilat perform better. Will the money be enough? No. But, the sum of money raised will go a long way towards helping the perguruan better support our kids.
The contribution will also help with general programme support, such as administrative materials, small operational costs involved in running classes, and other behind the scenes needs required to ensure that training sessions continue smoothly.
It may also be useful for members to understand how other perguruan typically sustain their operations. Many Silat schools charge monthly perguruan or membership fees averaging about $10 per month, which are collected on top of their usual training fees. This alone would amount to about $120 a year.
In addition, many perguruan also raise funds through grading systems, where students pay between $25 and $60 for each belt progression.
By contrast, Sendeng Teratai does not charge any monthly perguruan fees, nor do we charge grading fees. Our focus has always been on learning, character building, and community, rather than placing financial barriers on a studentβs progress in Silat.
For comparison, Sendeng Terataiβs contribution of $15 every six months amounts to only $30 a year, which is significantly lower than the typical funding structures used by many other martial arts schools. This allows us to remain accessible while still taking a small step towards ensuring the long term sustainability of the perguruan.
This contribution is therefore not intended to burden families, but rather to ensure that Sendeng Teratai can continue functioning in a responsible and sustainable manner while preserving the values upon which the perguruan was built.
We sincerely appreciate the continued support, trust, and understanding of our students and families as we take this small step to ensure that Sendeng Teratai can continue serving the community for many years to come.
